We offer more than 70 affordable degree and certificate programs to nearly 2,000 full-time and 7,500 part-time students, as well as a wide variety of noncredit continuing education courses to nearly 11,000 students per year.

The ESL Specialist provides program support for all areas that serve ESL learners.  The ESL Specialist conducts the appropriate intake, assessment, and goal development for ESL learners, serves as a resource for all ESL instructional staff, and works as a team member with the Adult Developmental and Literacy Programs unit. 

Duties include, but are not limited to, orientation, intake, assessment, and goal development for ESL learners; placement testing, advising, and post-testing; referrals to support services or outside agencies, providing support for teachers and instruction; communication with ESL learners and instructors/tutors regarding placement, progress, and attendance issues; processing and maintaining student records; recommending, preparing, and maintaining instructional technologies, materials, and resources; and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Work schedule is up to 20 hours per week, alternating between evening (Monday to Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m.) and daytime (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) hours on a regular basis.  Occasional weekend and Friday evening hours may be required.  Work site locations vary throughout Harford County (HCC, Bel Air Middle School, Edgewood High School, Edgewood Public Library, and Life Church-Aberdeen).


A bachelor's degree and one year of related ESL teaching experience are required.  Computer proficiency in a Windows-based computer environment is also required.  Experience administering standard tests, experience advising adult learners, and experience supporting teachers and instruction preferred.
