The Learning Center is seeking innovative and compassionate individuals to provide academic support to HCC students by promoting effective study habits and learning strategies while assisting students with course content.  There are Learning Assistants available during all hours of operation to work with students in a variety of formats including individual, group, walk-in, and in-class learning sesions.  Ideal candidates work collaboratively and effectively with students of all academic backgrounds.  This position directly supports the College's Strategic Plan by providing support and intervention to eradicate attainment gaps based on income, race, gender, and ethnicity.

Learning Assistants conduct individualized group, walk-in, and/or Supplemental Instruction sessions for HCC students.  These sessions are designed to help students develop study skills and become independent learners.

Duties include, but are not limited to, promoting a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment in the Learning Center; assisting students in learning course content by referring to student class notes, assignments, and class resources; promoting study skills and learning strategies; visiting classes to advertise the services of the Learning Center; attending training sessions to become College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified; and following the policies and procedures of the Learning Center and Harford Community College.

Learning Assistants are hired in the following academic areas based on student demand:

  • Behavioral and Social Sciences
  • Business, Education, Computing, and Applied Technology
  • Humanities
  • Nursing and Allied Health Professions
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
  • Visual, Performing and Applied Arts


  • Peer Learning Assistant (undergraduate coursework):  $10.00 per hour
  • Master Learning Assistant (associate's degree):  $13.12per hour
  • Professional Learning Assistant (bachelor's degree or beyond):  $16.11 per hour

These are part-time, hourly, as-needed, non-exempt staff positions.  Applicants must be willing to work a varied schedule of day, evening, and weekend hours. 

The hours of part-time, as-needed employees are limited to a total of less than 500 hours in each fiscal year (July 1 June 30).

REQUIREMENTS: Success completion of at least six credits of college-level courses; demonstrated mastery of subject area, with at least a B average; excellent communication skills; and demonstrated experinece working with students of diverse backgrounds are required.

Preference will be given to applicants who are currently enrolled at HCC; and/or who have previous experienece as a learning assistant; and/or who can assist in a variety of subjects and disciplines.
