RESPONSIBILITIES:

The role of the Academic Success Coach is to support student success, retention, and degree completion by providing regularly-scheduled individual coaching for students. This position supports the College's strategic plan goal to eradicate attainment gaps based on income, race, gender, and ethnicity.  Methods of support include using non-cognitive assessments to determine appropriate support resources for students; establishing student success plans and monitoring academic progress; ensuring students are appropriately registered for courses in subsequent semesters, and continually assessing the effectiveness of these and other retention initiatives.  Academic Success Coaches will work primarily with African-American students enrolled in transitional courses and other identified students who traditionally stop out or drop out of college. 

Duties include, but are not limited to, analyzing results of non-cognitive motivational assessments to determine the appropriate outreach to students; serving as liaison to the Education and Transitional Studies Division to ensure that students complete required developmental courses; teaching students study skills and learning strategies to facilitate student success; helping students overcome personal barriers to success; monitoring and analyzing student progress and retention; and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

These are exempt, professional staff positions; projected start dates are May to July 2014 and will continue until May 30, 2015.  Work schedule will vary according to the needs of the College, to include day, evening, and weekend hours.  Positions will be filled contingent on funding. 
 

 REQUIREMENTS:

 

 

A master's degree in education, psychology, or a related field and three to five years of experience working intrusively and supportively with students of racially diverse backgrounds are required.  Applicants must be proficient in a Windows-based computer environment, including MS Word and Excel, and possess exceptional interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills.
