American Profile Series: George Washington, American Cincinnatus
Called the "Father of his Country" and the one "Indispensable Man" of the American Revolution and early republic, Washington was even more. This session will look at the many Washingtons: the early surveyor, the militia leader during the French and Indian War, the post war politician and planter, the general during the Revolution, and of course, the first American president. It will also examine Washington's core values. Like the Roman general Cincinnatus, Washington put down his plow to lead his nation and then put aside power to return to private life. While many assumed he would become America's George I, he had a very different view of his country's future - and his own.

Meeting Day(s): Fri.   11/14/2014    Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM  1 session
Location: Edgewood Hall    Instructor: J. Rath

American Profile Series: Aaron Burr
Aaron Burr's treachery makes Benedict Arnold's look tame by comparison. A schemer and plotter all of his life, this New England blue blood not only killed Alexander Hamilton in America's most famous duel, he plotted the greatest act of treason in the history of the United States. Had he succeeded in his plans, our country, whatever country it might be, would be very different today. This session focuses on who Aaron Burr was and looks at his relationships with some of America's most revered leaders from George Washington and Alexander Hamilton to Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.

American Profile Series: Benedict Arnold
Perhaps the most fascinating character to emerge from the American Revolution was its bravest warrior and greatest traitor. Why did Benedict Arnold do what he did? This session traces the rise and fall of Arnold, his lovely wife Peggy and the flamboyant British officer, Major John Andre. Arnold's capture of Fort Ticonderoga, his march on Canada, bravery at Saratoga, and treachery at West Point will all be discussed. George Washington admired and trusted Benedict Arnold - for a while - and so might you!

Location: Edgewood Hall    Instructor: J. Rath

American Profile Series: Patrick Henry - The First Founding Father
As the American Revolution approached, Patrick Henry was America's greatest orator and one of its finest lawyers. His passion for liberty made him one of the first to call for America's independence from Great Britain, and his leadership brought many others to the cause. Later, that same passion led him to oppose his nation's new constitution. Known for his motto "Liberty or Death," a common jest at the time proposed that Henry, with his 18 children, and not George Washington, was the true father of his country.

Course: 45053     Registration: $19
Meeting Day(s): Fri.   12/5/2014    Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM  1 session
Location: Edgewood Hall    Instructor: J. Rath

American Profile Series: Thomas Jefferson, Sage of Monticello
A recent biographer of Jefferson labeled him "The American Sphinx" because of his secretive nature. Had Jefferson been more forthcoming, our third president would still be a difficult man to deal with because of his many contradictions. In the Declaration of Independence, he spoke of liberty, yet he kept slaves. We know for certain that he had a slave mistress and had several children with her. He wanted a weak national government, yet as president he stretched its powers in order to buy the Louisiana Territory. No man dominated the United States in the early 19th century more than Thomas Jefferson, but what long-term effects did he have?
