Our beautiful, 352-acre campus is located in the heart of vibrant Harford County, Maryland, and conveniently located near Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; and Wilmington, DE. We offer more than 70 affordable degree and certificate programs to nearly 2,000 full-time and 7,500 part-time students, as well as a wide variety of noncredit continuing education courses to nearly 11,000 students per year.

The Learning Center is seeking innovative and compassionate individuals to provide academic support to HCC students by promoting effective study habits and learning strategies while assisting students with course content.  Learning Assistants are available during all hours of operation to work with students in a variety of formats including individual, group, walk-in, and in-class learning sessions.  These sessions are designed to help students develop study skills and become independent learners. This position directly supports the College's Strategic Plan by providing support and intervention to eradicate attainment gaps based on income, race, gender, and ethnicity.

Duties include, but are not limited to, promoting a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment in the Learning Center; assisting students in learning course content by referring to student class notes, assignments, and class resources; promoting study skills and learning strategies; visiting classes to advertise the services of the Learning Center; attending training sessions to become College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified; and following the policies and procedures of the Learning Center and Harford Community College.

Learning Assistants are currently needed to provide support in the following academic areas:

  • Computer Science
  • Statistics
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Physics


  • Peer Learning Assistant (undergraduate coursework):  $10.30 per hour
  • Master Learning Assistant (associate's degree):  $13.51 per hour
  • Professional Learning Assistant (bachelor's degree or beyond):  $16.59 per hour

Work schedule is 20 hours per week consisting of five (5) four-hour  shifts covering day, evening, and weekend hours for the Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters.  Schedules will be determined by the supervisor.


Successful completion of at least six credits of college-level courses; demonstrated mastery of subject area, with at least a B average; excellent communication skills; demonstrated experience working with students of diverse backgrounds; and expertise to assist in Computer Science, Statistics, Math, Chemistry, and/or Physics courses are required.  Previous experience as a Learning Assistant is highly desirable.
